This is a "Haida"-style totem pole and starts with a beaver, surmounted by a grizzly bear, a raven and topped by four watchmen.
The tree for this pole came from the base of
Mount Adams in southwest Washington and was a gift of the Weyerhaeuser
Company. The artist carved the pole for $1,500 at the
Hilllvilla Restaurant on SW Terwilliger Boulevard in 1961 and it took
six weeks to complete. Iron supports were set into the concrete base to
ensure stability.
